- Death Note
Trading Card Game
1. Setup 2. Card Types 3. Game Flow 4. Deck Restriction 5. Glossary of Terms
1. Setup
In order to begin a game of Death Note Trading Card Game, you must have a deck of exactly 40 Death Note cards. You must also have an opponent that meets this same requirement
*Both players shuffle their decks, and offer their opponent a chance to cut the deck. *Decide who goes first. *Both players draw 5 cards off the top of their deck. *Both players select and put into play their respective "Death Note" card.
2. Card Types
There are 3 types of cards in Death Note Trading Card Game, Death Notes, Characters and Event cards.
Death Notes are put into play at the start of the game. You can only have 1 in your deck. Different Death Notes have different effects. If you scribe 7 names in your Death Note, you win.
Characters are played during the game and represent the many characters in the Death Note manga and anime series. Each Character has a "Will value". If this is lower than the opponent's Death Note's "Death value" the opponent can scribe that Character's name in their Death Note.
Events are played during the game and represent the many events that occur in the Death Note series. These have various effects and are usually discarded after they are resolved, unless otherwise noted on the card.
3. Game Flow
There are 5 Phases in the Death Note Collectible Card Game: Open, Draw, Main, Battle, and End.
Open Phase: During this Phase you reset your Death Note's Death Value to its original printed value, unless another card says otherwise.
Draw Phase: Draw 1 card off the top of your Deck. If you draw the last card of your Deck, you lose the game.
Main Phase: There are 3 actions you can take during this Phase: Scribe an opponent's Character, put a Character into play, or play an Event.
Playing a Character: If your Turn Marker is equal to or more than the Death Cost of a Character in your hand, you may write in that Character. You may only play 1 Character a turn.
Play an Event: This is similar to playing a Character. If your turn Marker is equal to or more than the Death Cost of an Event in your hand, you can play that Event. You may only play 1 Event a turn.
Scribbing a Character: Scribing a Character means putting its Name in your Death Note. When you scribe a character put a marker of some sort on your Death Note to show that you have Scribbed a Character. When you Scribe seven Characters, you win the game. You may only Scribe 1 Character. You may only Scribe during your turn.
Battle: If you like, you may attack your opponent's Death Note. Select 1 of your Characters and compare its Will to the Death Note's Death Value. If your Will is higher than the opponent's Death Value, your opponent's Death Value gets -1. If at anytime a player's Death Value is reduced to 0, that player loses the game. Also during this time, your opponent may select 1 of their Character's to Block this attack. In that case, compare the two Will Values. The one with the least Will is discarded. Each Character may only attack once, unless otherwise noted on the card.
End: This is the end of your turn. If you have more than 6 cards in your hand, discard cards to the Discard Pile until you have 6. Any effects that end at the turn or any cards that are discarded at the end of the turn are discarded now. Also, this is when Remain counters are removed from cards.
Turn Marker: Each player's Turn Marker begins at 0 at the start of the game. At the end of each player's turn, his/her Turn Marker is increase by one, up to a maxium of 8. There are Death Costs on all cards except for Death Notes.
4. Deck Restrictions
When building a Deck, you must follow two rules, Deck Restrictions, and a Banned/Restricted list. There currently isn't a Banned/Restricted list.
Deck Restrictions:
A deck must consist of exactly 40 cards. A deck must contain exactly 1 Death Note A deck must contain at least 15 Characters A deck may only have up to 3 copies of any given Character or Event. You may only have 3 copies of a Character with the same name. i.e. you may have 3 copies of C-7 Light Yagami, but you may not have 3 copies of C-21 Light Yagami, because the have the same name. This rule also applies to Events.
5. Glossary of Terms
Scribe: Add 1 Character's Name to your Death Note. You may not Scribe the same Character twice or a Character with the same name as the initially Scribbed Character.
Remain (X): This card Remains in play for X turns. At the end of each of your turns, remove 1 Remain from this card. When all Remains have passed, discard this card.
Eternal: This card stays in play until discarded by another effect.
Shinigami: This Character is a Shinigami. This trait may be mentioned by a card.
